What Does God Think About Britain's Got Talent?
God gave each of us gifts and talents to use for the greater glory of His goodness. If we have a talent for singing, we have a skill that can move hearts. If our talent is for comedy, we have the ability to restore lowly spirits. Great dancing can be relaxing and therapeutic. Other talents such as an exceptional physical ability like juggling or gymnastics can impress, shock, lift us out of lethargy. All these gifts have the power to heal and restore. But only if put to proper use.

When hapless souls are drawn to the show, Britains Got Talent for audition I am reminded of the temptation of Christ by the devil. The third temptation goes as follows: the devil takes Christ to a very high mountain and shows him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. "All this I will give you," he says, "If you will bow down and worship me."

It is commonly regarded by many that success on reality TV shows is some sort of panacea, that it will solve all their problems. The wrong thinking goes that if you give someone who has nothing overnight fame and success their lives will change for the better. Unfortunately, the opposite has been proved to be true time and time again. Even if you succeed in avoiding the ridicule of failure and reach the later stages of these competitions, you are very likely to be met with praise and insults in equal measure. You are putting yourself in the spotlight, and if you are not used to it, it can be a blinding and demoralising experience. If you manage to survive the pillorying of an unfriendly press and the abuse of a fickle public and find yourself signing a million pound contract with Simon Cowell or Piers Morgan, beware. What is it exactly you are signing away?

Remember Jesus in the desert. He had been starving for forty days, so he was in a pretty poor, desperate state when the devil picked him up. The dishevelled man must have seemed like easy pickings to the angel of sin. The devil's strategy becomes clear very quickly. He tries to turn Jesus' own claims against him. "If you are the son of God, prove it!" is the devil's taunt. Sounds familiar? The whole basis of shows like Britain's Got Talent is a similar laying down of the gauntlet: "If you think you have talent, prove it!"

Jesus was a wise man, familiar with the scriptures and his father's laws. He knew that the reward the devil was promising was a lie. Happiness does not come with fame and riches. If it did, there would not be so much misery among celebrities. True happiness is one of the gifts of the spirit and everyone is entitled to it regardless of means. Happiness is not being wrapped up in a lifesucking contract with the devil. Only the devil benefits from that.

The next time someone offers you the world, do as Jesus did. He replied: "Away from me Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only."
